Three Reasons To Regularly Clean Your Roof

Your roof provides a practical function to your home and protects it from weather conditions and the elements, but it also represents a massive portion of your home's exterior design and carries a great deal of aesthetic weight with it. Roof cleaning is an important part of maintaining both of these functions: knowing why roof cleaning is so important can help you understand why you should make it a part of your home maintenance schedule.

Prevent Mold and Moss Growth

Asphalt shingles and other roofing materials which are subject to a great deal of rainfall and are shaded by nearby trees can be susceptible to the growth of mold, moss, algae, and other types of plant growth. These growths will stain the roof black or dark green, with a sheen to them, which can ruin the appearance of your roof. However, they will also begin to eat away at the roofing materials underneath them, which makes the risk of a leak or roofing damage much more likely if they are not removed quickly. Regular cleaning can help remove moss and other plants which have taken root and prevent them from coming back in the future.

Maintain Energy Efficiency

If you have a reflective or lightly colored roof, especially if it is made out of metal, roof cleaning can be particularly useful for reducing your home's energy bills. This is because over time, dirt and other debris can mar the surface of your roofing materials, reducing their reflective qualities and causing them to absorb more of the sun's rays, increasing the heat within your home and placing a greater strain on your HVAC system. Cleaning your roof can help ensure that the comfort level of your house is maintained and save you money each month at the same time.

Debris Removal

If you have overhanging trees, your roof can quickly accumulate a great deal of organic debris, including leaves, twigs, branches, and so on. These items can hold onto moisture and increase the risk of a leak developing in your roof, and can also clog your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow, flooding the area around the base of your home and allowing water to seep into your basement and foundation where it can cause water damage. Regular roof cleaning will help ensure that your roof does not experience excessive wear due to the debris which has collected on it and will help protect your basement as well.

metal or shingled roofing - what do you choose?

I spent weeks researching metal and shingle roofing to try to figure out what would be the best material to use on my home. I weighed the costs, the length of life, the amount of maintenance required and how well each type would hold up to high winds and strong storms. After compiling all of the information that I needed to make an educated decision about the roofing for my home, I created a blog. This blog is meant to help other homeowners decide which roofing material would be best for their homes now and many years into the future.
