Filing An Insurance Claim For A New Roof? Follow These Tips

Blog

If your roof has sustained substantial damage in a storm or other natural disaster, there's a good chance your homeowner's insurance policy will cover the cost of a roof replacement. However, there are some things you'll want to make sure of when filing the claim to guarantee your claim is approved. Here's a look:

Have a professional assess the damage immediately.

Once you know your roof has been damaged, contact a local roofing contractor and have them come examine the roof structure as soon as possible. A professional's word that a roof needs to be entirely replaced means more than your own word. They should be able to fill out an inspection report describing the damage and concluding that you need an entirely new roof. Include this document with the claim form you send into your insurance company.

Take pictures with dates.

Many times, a good roofing company will do this for you. If they do not take pictures, however, you should take them yourself. Make sure they are clearly labeled with the date. (Most cameras have a setting that will embed the date in the photo.) This reassures the insurance company that you are showing them pictures of the roof's current condition and not of a situation that happened years ago. Try to have the front of your home visible in at least one of the photos so they can tell they're looking at images of your roof and not a neighbor's.

Know what your policy covers.

Before you send in your claim, take a careful look at your insurance policy. Does it only cover roofing damage caused by the wind, and not rain? Then you need to be careful that your roofing contractor emphasizes the wind damage. Does it only cover replacement with the same type of shingles you currently have? Then you need to make sure you have chosen a contractor who offers this type of shingles.

Policies vary greatly between companies. If there is anything in your policy you do not understand, call up your insurance company and ask a representative to explain it to do. You this before you file your claim so that you can use the information you learn to fill out the claim form in a way that will be most likely to get the claim approved.

If you are struggling to file a claim for a roof replacement, don't hesitate to ask your roofing company for assistance. They deal with this type of claim all of the time and are generally prepared to offer some personalized guidance.

Contact a company like Advanced Roofing and Construction for more information and assistance.

metal or shingled roofing - what do you choose?

I spent weeks researching metal and shingle roofing to try to figure out what would be the best material to use on my home. I weighed the costs, the length of life, the amount of maintenance required and how well each type would hold up to high winds and strong storms. After compiling all of the information that I needed to make an educated decision about the roofing for my home, I created a blog. This blog is meant to help other homeowners decide which roofing material would be best for their homes now and many years into the future.
